Santos have agreed a new repayment structure with Neymar’s family company over approximately $12.6 million in outstanding image-rights payments, with the debt potentially stretching until 2033.
Santos reach new agreement with Neymar over huge $12.6m image-rights debt
Santos have reached a new agreement with Neymar’s camp to restructure a huge image-rights debt that could leave the Brazilian club making payments until approximately 2033.
The club had recognised an original obligation of around $14.3 million connected to Neymar’s image rights following his return to Santos.
After making an initial payment of more than $1.7 million, approximately $12.6 million remains outstanding.
Santos restructure Neymar image-rights debt
Santos have now agreed a new repayment structure with Neymar’s family and NR Sports, the company responsible for managing many of the player’s commercial interests.
Under the latest arrangement, Santos are expected to make monthly payments of approximately $157,000.

If the club follows that schedule without making additional early payments, the remaining debt could take as many as 80 months to clear.
That would potentially extend Santos’ financial obligations connected to Neymar’s image rights until around the middle of 2033.
Original debt was around $14.3m
The total amount recognised by Santos was approximately $14.3 million.
The club has already paid more than $1.7 million toward that figure, reducing the outstanding balance to roughly $12.6 million.
The new agreement has been designed to spread that remaining amount across a much longer period.
The goal is to reduce the immediate pressure on Santos’ cash flow while allowing the club to continue meeting its obligations to Neymar’s camp.
Santos could still be paying Neymar in 2033
The length of the agreement creates one of the most striking details of the story.
Neymar’s current playing contract with Santos runs only until the end of 2026.
However, the club’s financial obligations linked to his previous image-rights agreement could continue for several more years after that contract expires.
In the most extended scenario, Santos could still be making payments connected to Neymar more than six years after the end of his current deal.
Club can reduce debt more quickly
The 80-month timeline is not necessarily fixed.
Santos retain the possibility of making additional advance payments whenever their financial position allows it.

Any extra payments would reduce the outstanding balance and shorten the overall repayment period.
That means the club could clear the debt significantly earlier than 2033 if new revenue becomes available.
Previous repayment plan failed
This is not the first time Santos and Neymar’s camp have attempted to restructure the image-rights obligation.
An earlier plan required Santos to make several larger initial payments before moving onto monthly instalments.

However, the club struggled to meet the first stage of that schedule.
Those difficulties forced the two sides back into negotiations and ultimately produced the latest arrangement based on smaller monthly payments.
This is separate from the Monaco transfer-ban deal
The image-rights agreement should not be confused with another recent financial arrangement involving Santos and NR Sports.
Neymar’s family company recently provided approximately $1.9 million in immediate funding to help Santos settle a debt with Monaco connected to the transfer of Jean Lucas.
That payment allowed Santos to resolve the issue that had triggered a FIFA transfer ban.
The $1.9 million Monaco operation and the approximately $12.6 million Neymar image-rights debt are two separate agreements.
NR Sports helped Santos despite being owed millions
The relationship between Santos and Neymar’s family has therefore become increasingly unusual from a financial perspective.
On one side, Santos still owe approximately $12.6 million connected to Neymar’s image rights.
On the other, NR Sports recently provided additional funds to help the club solve its urgent Monaco debt.
That means Neymar’s family company is simultaneously a major creditor of Santos and an important source of financial support for the club.
The situation underlines just how deep the commercial and financial relationship between Santos and Neymar’s camp has become.
NR Sports gains new commercial opportunities
The separate Monaco arrangement also gives NR Sports greater involvement in Santos’ commercial operations.
As part of that deal, the company will participate in negotiations involving unsold advertising spaces on Santos’ kits.
Revenue generated through those sponsorship opportunities can be used to recover the money provided to the club.
That agreement further strengthens NR Sports’ position around Santos beyond Neymar’s role as a player.
Neymar future remains uncertain
The timing of the new image-rights agreement is particularly interesting because Neymar’s long-term future at Santos has not yet been resolved.
His current contract expires at the end of 2026.

There has not yet been a confirmed agreement to extend that deal, with Neymar expected to evaluate his future after the season.
It is therefore possible that Neymar could leave Santos while the club still owes his camp tens of millions of reais in image-rights payments.
Santos trying to stabilise finances
The new repayment schedule reflects the financial pressure facing Santos.
The club has been managing several major obligations while also attempting to strengthen the squad and remain competitive on the pitch.
Spreading Neymar’s outstanding payments over a longer period gives Santos greater short-term flexibility.
However, it also creates a significant long-term financial commitment.
Neymar relationship now extends far beyond football
Neymar’s return to Santos was always going to have an enormous sporting and commercial impact.
But recent developments show that the relationship between the two sides now extends far beyond what happens on the pitch.

NR Sports has become involved in debt restructuring, sponsorship opportunities and emergency financial support for the club.
For now, the key development is clear. Santos have reached a new agreement to restructure approximately $12.6 million in outstanding Neymar image-rights payments, with the repayment schedule potentially continuing for as long as 80 months and extending into 2033.
