Son Woong Jung, a football coach and father of Premier League star Son Heung Min, was summarily indicted on Friday (Aug 30) on charges of abusing young players at his football training centre, according to Yonhap news agency.
Regional prosecutors in Chuncheon, located about 75 kilometres northeast of Seoul, said that Son and two of his assistant coaches at Son Football Academy in the eastern town were ordered to pay an undisclosed fine and to complete a training programme aimed at preventing further child abuse.
If neither the court nor the defendants seek a public trial following the summary indictment, the prosecutors’ orders will be finalised.
One of the assistant coaches implicated is Son Heung Min’s older brother, Heung Yun.
The three coaches are accused of physically and verbally abusing young players at the senior Son’s namesake football training facility.
The case came to light when the parents of one player reported Son and his staff to local police in March.
The police subsequently forwarded the case to the prosecution in April. – Bernama-Yonhap
