Argentina OFFICIALLY announce new captain after Messi’s absence

Rodrigo De Paul states Lionel Messi retains the Argentina captaincy despite not playing in upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to an ankle injury. Messi, out since the Copa America final, remains integral to the national team’s plans.

Rodrigo De Paul has affirmed that Lionel Messi remains the captain of Argentina, despite Messi’s prolonged absence due to injury. The Inter Miami player has been sidelined since the Copa America final because of an ankle issue and will miss Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

Messi continues to be a crucial figure in Lionel Scaloni’s plans for the national team. He participated in all but one match during the Copa America tournament, although he only managed to score once and provide one assist. Despite his limited contributions, his presence on the field is still highly valued.

Angel Di Maria, who retired from international football after their Copa America victory, was typically Messi’s deputy. Since both players are unavailable, it is anticipated that De Paul, who has earned 69 international caps, will take on the captaincy against Chile. However, De Paul has downplayed this notion.

“I always say that I play the role that they give me,” De Paul stated. “It’s been many years. I feel like an important player in this team. That’s all I can say. Afterwards, we know that the armband belongs to Leo. Whoever has to wear it will be circumstantial because he is the captain of this team.”

Argentina currently leads their qualifying group with five victories out of six matches. Meanwhile, Messi has resumed training and is expected to return to MLS action later this month.

The Argentine squad remains confident under Scaloni’s leadership as they aim for continued success in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
