France unexpectedly receives massive Spain semi-final boost

Aurelien Tchouameni is ready to make a comeback after a two-match absence, helping the French team have an important additional option for the midfield battle against Spain in the 2026 World Cup semifinals.

Coach Didier Deschamps confirmed that Aurelien Tchouameni is capable of featuring in the semifinal match against Spain. Despite not being fully recovered, the midfielder on Real Madrid’s payroll has returned to training and could be used if the coaching staff deems the conditions appropriate.

Tchouameni has not played since the 3-0 victory over Sweden in the round of 32 on June 30. A hamstring injury caused the 26-year-old player to miss the 1-0 win against Paraguay in the round of 16 and the 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals.

“In the last match, the risk was too great. He is ready, although we cannot say that Tchouameni is 100% recovered,” Deschamps stated.

Tchouameni’s return brings a positive signal for the French team ahead of one of the biggest challenges of the tournament. Spain built their journey to the semi-finals based on possession capability, high pressing, and continuously forcing opponents back into their own half.

In that context, Tchouameni can help “Les Bleus” boost their strength in the center. The Real Madrid midfielder possesses interception ability, physical tackling, and space shielding in front of the defense.

However, the fact that Tchouameni is fit to play does not mean he is guaranteed a starting spot. Deschamps could still maintain the midfield structure that helped France overcome Morocco, with Manu Kone playing alongside Adrien Rabiot.

Warren Zaire-Emery is also another option. Therefore, Deschamps must weigh between maintaining the framework that is operating stably and using Tchouameni to add a player with a clearer defensive tendency.

The French team coach’s decision also depends on how he wants to approach the match. “Les Bleus” have the speed to cause damage in transitions, but Deschamps does not accept the view that his team will actively yield the ball and only wait to counter-attack.

“Spain can create enormous pressure, but we are also a team that needs to have the ball. It will be an intense battle to gain control,” Deschamps declared.

Deschamps’s message shows that France wants to play on equal terms with Spain, instead of actively dropping deep and yielding possession to the opponent. “Les Bleus” can still exploit speed in transitions, but that is not the only approach in the semifinal match.

In that context, Tchouameni’s return opens up more options for Deschamps in the central area. Whichever option is used, the French team coach shows that “Les Bleus” are ready for a rematch against the opponent they once clashed with in the Euro semifinals.
