Lionel Messi Faces Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit After Missing Argentina Match

Global football icon Lionel Messi and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) find themselves at the center of a massive legal battle in the United States. A Miami-based event promoter has officially filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the star and the federation, alleging fraud and a blatant breach of contract regarding a missed exhibition match last year.

The lawsuit, filed in the Miami-Dade circuit court by VID Music Group, claims that the promoters lost millions of dollars after paying a premium to guarantee Messi’s participation in a highly anticipated international friendly, only for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to sit out entirely.

The $7 Million Contract and the “No-Show”

According to the court filings, VID Music Group struck a lucrative $7 million deal with the AFA last summer. The agreement granted VID the exclusive rights to organize and promote two exhibition matches in October: Argentina vs. Venezuela and Argentina vs. Puerto Rico.

Understanding that Messi’s presence was the primary driving force behind ticket, broadcast, and sponsorship revenues, VID included a specific clause in the contract. The agreement explicitly mandated that Messi had to play a minimum of 30 minutes in both matches unless he sustained an injury.

However, when match day arrived for the clash against Venezuela at Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida, Messi was nowhere near the pitch. Instead, he watched his teammates secure a 1-0 victory from the comfort of a luxury suite—which VID claims they also paid for. The absence drastically impacted attendance, with only around 15,000 fans showing up to the 65,000-capacity venue.

The Inter Miami Controversy

The situation escalated from a simple disappointment to a legal dispute due to Messi’s actions just 24 hours later. The lawsuit points out that Messi was clearly not injured, as he laced up his boots the very next day for his club, Inter Miami.

Messi not only played in the crucial MLS fixture against Atlanta United but also dominated, scoring two goals and providing an assist in a 4-0 victory to secure a vital home-field advantage for the playoffs. VID claims this completely invalidated any excuse for his absence from the national team exhibition.

Venue Changes and Broken Promises

The financial bleeding for VID reportedly continued into the second scheduled friendly against Puerto Rico. Originally slated to take place at the massive Soldier Field in Chicago, the match had to be abruptly relocated to the much smaller Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale due to poor ticket sales—a decline allegedly fueled by local immigration crackdowns in the Windy City.

Even after drastically slashing ticket prices to just $25, the Florida venue failed to sell out. VID alleges that the AFA contractually owed them a 25% compensation refund for Messi’s initial no-show, a sum that was never paid. Furthermore, the promoters claim the AFA promised to make up for the massive losses by granting VID the rights to future makeup fixtures against China in 2026, which ultimately never materialized.

While an exact dollar amount for the sought damages has not been explicitly stated, VID Music Group is demanding full compensation for their millions in lost revenue. Both Messi’s representatives and the AFA have yet to release an official public response to the allegations.
