Michael Olise, one of the most prominent faces of the French national team at the World Cup, has unexpectedly become the center of a controversy related to banned substances.
The incident originated from a photo circulating on social media, capturing the locker area of the midfielder currently playing for Bayern Munich. Beside his match boots, jersey, and personal bag, fans spotted a small jar believed to be snus, a type of moist tobacco originating from Sweden that contains nicotine.

Snus is a smokeless tobacco product, usually packaged in small pouches. Although it does not produce smoke like traditional cigarettes, this product still contains nicotine and causes much controversy in the sports world. Notably, the sale of snus is banned in most European Union countries, including France and Germany, where Olise is playing for Bayern Munich.
This very detail caused the incident to quickly attract attention. Olise is currently considered one of the key factors of the French team, as well as a name receiving high expectations at the World Cup. Therefore, the image related to snus appearing in his locker immediately generated mixed opinions.

Nevertheless, Olise is not the first player found to be associated with this product. In 2018, ahead of a friendly match between England and Italy, striker Jamie Vardy drew attention when he appeared with a tin of snus. Michael Olise is carrying huge expectations at the 2026 World Cup.
Afterward, Vardy admitted he learned about this product when he joined Leicester City, while also suggesting that more players use it than the public imagines. The English striker’s statement at that time sparked a major debate about nicotine use habits in professional football.
Currently, Michael Olise’s side and the French national team have not released an official response regarding the incident. However, this controversy will certainly put extra pressure on the Bayern Munich star as Les Bleus prepare to enter an important match against Iraq at the World Cup.
