Alphonso Davies became the 1000th player to take the pitch at the 2026 World Cup on the day Canada secured a ticket to the round of 16.
Alphonso Davies created a memorable milestone at the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite previously having to sit out due to an injury. In the round of 32 match between Canada and South Africa, the Canada national team captain was brought on from the substitute bench, thereby becoming the 1000th player to feature in the expanded 48-team World Cup.

Davies entered the pitch in the second half, after coach Jesse Marsch confirmed he was eligible to play again following a hamstring injury. The appearance of the star currently playing for Bayern Munich received loud applause from the Canadian spectators at the Los Angeles stadium. This was not only a personal milestone for Davies but also a special moment in the history of the 2026 World Cup.
The match between Canada and South Africa took place with tension matching the nature of a knockout round. South Africa entered the match full of determination and had moments where they caused discomfort in the first half. However, the African representative lacked accuracy in their final passes, causing dangerous opportunities to slip away regrettably.
Canada also had notable situations before the break. Moise Bombito almost opened the scoring with a header, but Aubrey Modiba managed to clear the ball right on the goal line. A few minutes later, Tajon Buchanan had a chance to finish inside the box, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams showed excellent reflexes to keep a clean sheet for South Africa.

After the break, Canada gradually controlled the match better. Tani Oluwaseyi had a shot that forced Williams to continue showcasing his talent, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi also had a timely intervention to prevent Canada from scoring. When Davies was brought onto the pitch in the 75th minute, his speed and ability to create breakthroughs on the flank helped the home team significantly increase the pressure.
The final turning point came in the 92nd minute. Following a poor clearance by the South African defense, Stephen Eustaquio controlled the ball and unleashed a low shot from the edge of the box, sending the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, leaving Ronwen Williams with no chance to save it. The 1-0 victory helped Canada reach the World Cup round of 16 for the first time, while South Africa left the tournament with their heads held high after a historic journey.
