Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to substitute Federico Valverde early caused fierce controversy, amid the context of Uruguay falling into a perilous position in Group H of the 2026 World Cup.
On the morning of June 27, in the 0-1 defeat against Spain in the final matchday of Group H at the 2026 World Cup, Federico Valverde became the center of attention as he reacted with full disappointment following coach Marcelo Bielsa’s substitution decision.

In the 57th minute, when Uruguay was trailing and needed an equalizer to keep their hopes of advancing alive, Bielsa unexpectedly withdrew captain Valverde from the pitch, bringing on forward Federico Vinas as a replacement. The midfielder on the books of Real Madrid handed the captain’s armband to Rodrigo Bentancur, shook hands with his teammate, and then walked straight to the bench area without looking at or talking to Bielsa.
The camera later captured the scene of Valverde using his shirt to cover his mouth to say something to his teammates. He stood up several times looking frustrated before being reassured by other players and moved to sit in a position far away from Bielsa. Despite no direct argument occurring, this image further raised suspicions about a fractured relationship between the coach and his player.
Previously, on June 26, Uruguayan media revealed that Valverde was among a group of players who requested Bielsa to change his training methods and tactical approach. In response, the Argentine strategist organized a 48-minute meeting to defend his views, making the internal atmosphere of the national team even more tense.

After the match, legend Diego Forlan also expressed his confusion at Bielsa’s decision. “I really find that decision very difficult to understand. When chasing the score against a strong opponent like Spain, the last player I would think of substituting is Federico Valverde. He is the one pulling the whole team forward, appearing at every hotspot, and looking like the only player capable of making a difference,” Forlan assessed.
The former Uruguayan star emphasized that coaches always deserve respect for difficult decisions, but he argued that withdrawing Valverde from the pitch weakened Uruguay instead of making them stronger.
Uruguay subsequently still could not find a way into Spain’s goal and suffered a 0-1 defeat in the final matchday, thereby being eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. This is a shock for the South American representative since prior to the tournament, they and Spain were rated much higher than their two group opponents, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
