On June 7, Perez was re-elected as president of Real Madrid after defeating opponent Enrique Riquelme. During the campaign, the head of the Spanish Royal club revealed he was willing to spend about 150 million Euros to sign a major star currently playing for a top club in the Champions League.
Perez also continuously denied a series of rumored names such as Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane. He emphasized that the target is a midfielder or a player capable of carrying the ball, breaking through, and creating immense excitement among the fans.
“I will send an offer to a major club in the Champions League. This could be the most expensive deal in Real Madrid’s history. The important thing is that this signing must generate excitement,” Perez shared on the Horizonte program.
True to his declaration, on June 10, Real Madrid issued an official statement confirming they had offered 150 million Euros to outright purchase the playing rights of Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.
In the statement, the Santiago Bernabeu outfit said the offer was sent after a board of directors meeting. However, Atletico Madrid rejected this offer, simultaneously citing the Argentine striker’s release clause.
The fact that Real Madrid publicly disclosed transfer information is a very rare occurrence, which further fuels the belief that Alvarez is indeed the “mystery Galactico” that Perez is targeting.
Not long before this, Barcelona was also reported to have sent a 100 million Euro offer for Alvarez, but it was rejected by Atletico. In addition, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the 2022 World Cup champion, but neither team has made an official offer yet.
Initially, many sources claimed that Alvarez’s contract at Atletico Madrid had a release clause of up to 500 million Euros. However, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that this agreement contains special clauses for a number of clubs regularly participating in the Champions League, including Barcelona. This could bring the actual transfer fee down to around the 150 million Euro mark, opening up opportunities for European giants to compete for the Argentine striker’s signature.
