Lamine Yamal had a forgettable 2026 World Cup debut as he failed to help Spain defeat Cape Verde in a 0-0 draw in their opening match. Considered the biggest hope in La Roja’s attack, the 19-year-old prodigy was only brought onto the pitch from the bench and did not make the expected difference.
Yamal’s absence from the starting lineup surprised many people. However, the reason stemmed from a hamstring injury the player suffered while playing for Barcelona ahead of the World Cup. The Spanish coaching staff did not want to risk the young star’s fitness and decided to bench him to avoid the risk of re-injury.
Yamal encountered the issue during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on April 22. After successfully converting a penalty to open the scoring in the 39th minute, the player born in 2007 immediately signaled to the coaching bench. He lay down on the pitch and had to receive medical attention before leaving the field. This injury significantly affected Yamal’s World Cup preparation.
Before the clash with Cape Verde, Spain’s head coach confirmed that Yamal was not at his best fitness level and would not start. Nevertheless, when La Roja faced many difficulties against the opponent’s tight defense, the manager was forced to bring his most important piece onto the pitch in the final minutes in hopes of finding a decisive goal.

In his 19 minutes on the field, Yamal made 14 ball carries covering a total distance of over 120 meters, created one key pass, and achieved a passing accuracy of 84%. He also delivered 7 crosses and had 2 attempts on goal, but none of the shots were on target. Additionally, the young player was only successful in 2 out of 4 dribbles and lost possession 12 times in the face of fierce marking from the Cape Verde defenders.
These figures show that Yamal has yet to reach his best form following his injury. Nonetheless, being given the opportunity to play at the World Cup at the age of 19 remains a memorable milestone in this young talent’s career. Spain will certainly need a fitter and more explosive Yamal in the upcoming matches if they want to go deep in the 2026 World Cup.
