Messi Avoids Suspension Despite Receiving Five Yellow Cards in MLS
Lionel Messi has avoided a one-match suspension in Major League Soccer despite receiving five yellow cards during the 2026 season, thanks to a surprising league rule.

The Inter Miami captain received his fifth booking during his team’s 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati on October 28.
Under normal MLS rules, five yellow cards would lead to an automatic one-match suspension.
However, the 39-year-old Argentine superstar is still allowed to play in Inter Miami’s next match against New England Revolution.
Why has Messi avoided suspension?
Messi’s fifth yellow card initially raised concerns that he would miss Inter Miami’s important upcoming match.
However, MLS has a special rule called the “Good Behavior Incentive”, which rewards players who avoid disciplinary problems.

Under this rule, players who complete five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, red card or additional disciplinary punishment have one yellow card removed from their accumulated total.
The rule can be used up to three times during a regular season.
Messi has already qualified for this benefit twice during the 2026 campaign.
Messi’s yellow card total drops from five to three
Although Messi has officially received five yellow cards this season, two have been removed from his total for suspension purposes.
That means his disciplinary situation is now:
- Yellow cards received: 5
- Yellow cards deducted: 2
- Yellow cards counting towards suspension: 3
As a result, Messi remains below the five-card suspension limit and is eligible to face New England Revolution.

Importantly, this rule applies to every MLS player who meets the requirements, not just Messi.
Major boost for Inter Miami ahead of crucial match
Messi’s availability is good news for Inter Miami as the club prepares for the final matches of the regular season.
The Argentine superstar has been one of the team’s most important players throughout the campaign.
Inter Miami will face New England Revolution on November 1 before meeting Charlotte FC on November 7.
Although Messi is available, his place in the starting lineup will still depend on the coaching staff’s decision.
For now, a little-known MLS rule has helped Messi avoid suspension and remain available for Inter Miami at an important stage of the season.
