Kylian Mbappé has faced strong criticism from France legend Bixente Lizarazu, who questioned his attitude during the Ballon d’Or campaign and urged him to focus more on team success.

French Legend Slams Mbappé for Being Selfish and Lacking Humility

Kylian Mbappé has come under heavy criticism from French football legend Bixente Lizarazu, who accused the Real Madrid superstar of being too selfish and lacking humility.

The former France defender made the strong comments on Téléfoot on November 1, following Mbappé’s defeat in the 2026 Ballon d’Or race.

Lizarazu believes the 27-year-old must focus more on helping his teams win trophies rather than promoting his individual achievements.

French legend strongly criticises Mbappé

Lizarazu, who won the 1998 World Cup and EURO 2000 with France, admitted he was disappointed by Mbappé’s attitude during the Ballon d’Or campaign.

He said the Real Madrid forward had shown a lack of humility and focused too much on promoting himself.

“He went into something very individualistic, with a lack of humility,” Lizarazu said.

The former Bayern Munich defender explained that Mbappé’s public comments gave him the impression that other players were being forgotten.

However, these comments were Lizarazu’s personal opinion about Mbappé’s behaviour, not a proven judgment about his character.

Lizarazu demands more team success from Mbappé

Lizarazu also questioned whether Mbappé’s impressive goalscoring record was enough.

He believes the France captain must do more to help Real Madrid and his national team win major titles.

“He scores a lot of goals, but he must help his team win,” Lizarazu insisted.

The former defender encouraged Mbappé to return to France with a stronger focus on teamwork.

For Lizarazu, winning trophies together is more important than chasing individual records.

Mbappé loses Ballon d’Or to Harry Kane

The criticism came shortly after Mbappé finished second in the 2026 Ballon d’Or voting.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane won the prestigious award with 1,055 points, while Mbappé received 1,027 points.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal finished third with 881 points.

Lizarazu praised Kane’s team spirit while expressing disappointment with Mbappé’s approach to the award.

More pressure on the Real Madrid superstar

Despite the criticism, Mbappé continues to produce impressive individual performances for Real Madrid.

However, Lizarazu believes the French superstar must show that his goals can also lead to major team success.

Mbappé has not publicly responded to these latest comments.

With another major challenge ahead for both Real Madrid and France, Mbappé will have an opportunity to answer his critics through his performances on the pitch.
