In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through Major League Soccer, Javier Mascherano has suddenly stepped down as the manager of Inter Miami, just months after guiding the franchise to its first-ever MLS Cup title.
According to the official club announcement, the Argentine tactician is departing for “personal reasons.” However, the statement also confirmed a broader shake-up, revealing that Mascherano’s entire coaching staff will be leaving the South Florida club alongside him.
To fill the immediate void, Inter Miami announced that sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will step onto the touchline to serve as the team’s head coach on an interim basis.

A Historic, Yet Short-Lived, Tenure
Mascherano took the reins ahead of the 2025 season surrounded by a fair share of skepticism, as his prior coaching experience was strictly limited to the Argentine youth national team setup. Defying the critics, he successfully reunited with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi to orchestrate a historic campaign, culminating in a dramatic MLS Cup Final victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments,” Mascherano expressed in his heartfelt farewell statement.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward,” he added.

A Rocky Start to the Title Defense
While last season ended in ultimate glory, Inter Miami’s current title defense has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Domestically, the team has managed a respectable three wins out of five league matches, though they have been frustrated by two draws at their brand-new home venue, Nu Stadium.
The heaviest blow to the club’s current campaign, however, came on the continental stage. Last month, Inter Miami suffered a highly disappointing early exit from the Concacaf Champions Cup, crashing out in the Round of 16 at the hands of Nashville SC.
Now, with their championship-winning manager suddenly gone, Interim Coach Guillermo Hoyos faces the monumental task of stabilizing a star-studded locker room and keeping Inter Miami’s ambitions for back-to-back domestic titles alive.
