Although Portugal defeated Chile 2-1 in a friendly match that took place in the early hours of June 7, Rafael Leao left an ugly image by receiving a straight red card.
The friendly match between Portugal and Chile became the center of controversy following a brawl at the end of the first half. Leao was sent off for violent conduct towards the visitors’ Roman.

The incident stemmed from a clash between Joao Cancelo and Felipe Faundez. However, the situation escalated quickly when Leao rushed in to defend his teammate. The AC Milan forward repeatedly shoved his opponent’s chest before allegedly making forceful contact with Roman’s throat and jaw. As a result, the referee did not hesitate to issue straight red cards to both players.
Although Leao’s action was deemed an “open hand” (not a clenched fist)—a detail that could help reduce the penalty—the threat of an additional ban from FIFA still looms large. This is a major concern for head coach Roberto Martinez with the 2026 World Cup in North America fast approaching.
Returning to the on-pitch action, Portugal continued to affirm their status as a title contender. Under the leadership of captain Cristiano Ronaldo, the Seleção secured a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Goncalo Guedes.
