Mason Greenwood has made Champions League history after scoring a historic free-kick goal in Fenerbahçe’s stunning 3-2 victory over Liverpool, ending a remarkable record that had stood since Lionel Messi’s goal in 2019.
Former Man Utd Star Mason Greenwood Makes Champions League History After Stunning Liverpool Win
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has made Champions League history after helping Fenerbahçe secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool on November 4.
The English forward scored an important equaliser as the Turkish giants came from behind twice to defeat the Premier League side.
However, his goal was much more than an ordinary Champions League strike.
It created a historic milestone for Fenerbahçe and ended a remarkable Liverpool record linked to Lionel Messi.
Greenwood makes Champions League history
Liverpool took the lead in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni, but Greenwood responded just four minutes later.
The former Man Utd star scored from a free kick that took a major deflection off Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet, leaving goalkeeper Alisson unable to react.

According to beIN SPORTS, Greenwood’s goal was Fenerbahçe’s first-ever direct free-kick goal in Champions League history.
The goal also ended Liverpool’s seven-year run without conceding directly from a free kick in the competition.
Greenwood follows Lionel Messi’s achievement
Interestingly, the last player to score directly from a free kick against Liverpool in the Champions League was Lionel Messi.
The Argentine superstar achieved that during Barcelona’s famous 3-0 victory over Liverpool in May 2019.

Seven years later, Greenwood has become the first player since Messi to achieve the same feat against the English giants.
The milestone made his performance even more special on a memorable European night.
Fenerbahçe stun Liverpool in dramatic comeback
Despite Greenwood’s equaliser, Liverpool regained the lead when Alexander Isak scored in the 69th minute.
However, Archie Brown levelled the score just four minutes later before Vedat Muriqi completed the comeback with a header in the 79th minute.
The 3-2 victory was Fenerbahçe’s first Champions League win since 2008, ending an 18-year wait.
Greenwood and Brown also became part of a rare European record, as two English players scored against an English club in the same match.
For Greenwood, the historic goal against Liverpool has become another major moment in his career, while Fenerbahçe celebrate one of their most memorable Champions League victories.
