Germany paid the price for their victory at the World Cup

The victory over Ivory Coast helped Germany secure an early ticket to advance, but coach Julian Nagelsmann received unwelcome news as Nico Schlotterbeck faces the risk of a serious ligament injury.

The German national team continued to showcase their strength at the 2026 World Cup by defeating Ivory Coast with a score of 2-1 to secure an early spot in the knockout rounds. However, the joy of “the Tanks” was overshadowed by the injury to center-back Nico Schlotterbeck.

The Borussia Dortmund star encountered an issue in the first half following a heavy collision with Amad Diallo. Despite receiving care from the medical team and trying to continue playing, Schlotterbeck was still visibly in pain during the remaining minutes of the half.

After the break, the German coaching staff decided not to take any risks by withdrawing the center-back born in 1999 from the pitch and bringing on Antonio Rudiger as his replacement. Initially, many thought this was merely a precautionary measure, but post-match statements from coach Julian Nagelsmann have left fans inevitably worried.

Sharing in the press conference, the German tactician admitted that his player’s situation was not very positive. “He has an issue with his inner ligament and will have to undergo an MRI tomorrow. Unfortunately, everything looks like it is not very positive.”

Nagelsmann also explained the reason why he did not substitute Schlotterbeck off immediately after the injury occurred. “Whether a player can continue playing or not always depends on the developments on the pitch. And he played very well until the half-time break.”

According to various sources in Germany, Schlotterbeck is suspected of having a ligament injury. If the test results confirm a serious injury, the 27-year-old defender could completely have to say goodbye to the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.

This would be a major loss for the German team in the context that Schlotterbeck is an important link in the left-sided defense. His tackling ability, initiating attacks from the backline, and chemistry with Rudiger make him an almost irreplaceable choice in Nagelsmann’s system.

Prior to the tournament, Germany also lost young talent Lennart Karl due to a muscle injury, forcing Nagelsmann to call up Assan Ouédraogo as a replacement. If Schlotterbeck continues to join the injury list, the squad depth of “the Tanks” will be significantly affected at the most crucial stage of the tournament.

Or else, gaining 6 points after two rounds gives Germany somewhat more control in rotating their squad. Currently, all attention is turned toward Schlotterbeck’s MRI results, as the coaching staff and fans hope the Dortmund center-back can return in time for the knockout rounds.

In the coming days, the German national team’s medical staff will continue to closely monitor Schlotterbeck’s condition before reaching a final conclusion regarding his ability to feature at the 2026 World Cup.
