Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. sets to follow his father’s footstep in Portugal history

While the Portuguese star remains at the top of his game at 41, his son continues to gain experience playing for Portugal and is generating excitement across the country.

While the all-time leading scorer for national teams remains active at 41, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. is beginning to carve out his own path not only at the club level but also with the Portugal National Team.

As announced Tuesday by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the 15-year-old is one of 22 players called up by the U-16 national team to compete in the UEFA Development Tournament from May 19 to 24 in northern Portugal.

Cristiano Jr., who has been developing in the youth ranks of the Saudi club following his father’s signing, will turn 16 in June and has shown flashes of talent that have not gone unnoticed; rumors have even emerged linking him to Al-Nassr’s first team. However, this news has once again put the spotlight on the young star and his career with his national team.

Although his last name carries weight, comparisons are inevitable, and media pressure has been mounting from an early age, those who follow him closely emphasize that he has what it takes to stand out on his own merits.

For this reason, Cristiano Jr. has been called up to participate in the UEFA Development Tournament, where he will face Greece, Italy, and the Czech Republic in a competition taking place in the city of Bragança, near the Spanish border, which typically brings together several of Europe’s top prospects in the age group.

This participation adds to his other appearances and contributions with the U-16 team, where he is gradually establishing himself. So far, he has played in six matches and scored one goal, and, like his father, he already knows what it’s like to lift trophies while wearing the Portuguese jersey.

The Algarve International Tournament last February and the Confederations Cup, held last October in Turkey, are his most recent achievements, but even before that, he stood out with the U-15 team by scoring a brace in the final of a tournament held in Croatia that Portugal won thanks to his contribution.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Jr.’s path has followed in his father’s footsteps: he played in the youth academies of Juventus (2018–2021), Manchester United (2021–2023), and Al-Nassr (2023–). He also shares several traits with CR7: physical power, goal-scoring ability, and a strong personality on the field.

Now, while Cristiano remains the leading figure in Portuguese soccer and prepares to play in his final World Cup, attention is also turning to the new generation. Father and son share the same passion, the same goal, and a unique connection to Portugal, in a story that promises to remain a topic of conversation for many years to come.
