Gavi sparked major concern after leaving Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Elche with a knee problem, but Hansi Flick has revealed the injury now appears less serious than initially feared.

Gavi suffered the injury following a collision late in the first half and initially attempted to continue playing.

However, the 22-year-old soon began struggling with discomfort and was eventually replaced by Pedri before half-time.

Barcelona feared another serious knee problem

The incident immediately caused concern because the problem involved Gavi’s right knee.

The Spanish midfielder has previously experienced significant problems with the same knee and underwent surgery in 2025 before spending several months on the sidelines.

That history made the sight of Gavi leaving the pitch in discomfort particularly worrying for Barcelona supporters.

Flick delivers encouraging update

Hansi Flick confirmed after the match that the injury was located in Gavi’s knee, but the Barcelona coach later offered a much more positive assessment.

According to Flick, the situation appeared “less serious than we feared” after Gavi was examined following the game.

That has raised hopes inside the club that the midfielder may have avoided another major knee injury.

Gavi set for MRI scan

Barcelona are still waiting for a definitive diagnosis.

Gavi is expected to undergo an MRI scan to determine the exact nature and severity of the problem.

The club have not yet officially announced a recovery timeline, meaning any suggestion of a lengthy absence remains premature.

Athletic Club clash now in doubt

Barcelona’s next match comes against Athletic Club, and Gavi’s availability will depend on the results of the medical tests.

Given his injury history, Barça are unlikely to take unnecessary risks even if the scans confirm that the problem is relatively minor.

For now, however, the early signs are significantly more encouraging than they appeared when Gavi first went down against Elche.

After an alarming moment during Barcelona’s opening victory, Flick’s update has provided some much-needed relief while the club waits for the final MRI results.
