Spanish media were not gentle either. Marca assessed that Ecuador completed a comeback against a German team that is “gradually declining” in the tournament, while suggesting that the “title contender” label seems to be an oversized shirt for the Mannschaft right now.
AS called Ecuador “courageous” and emphasized that the South American representative demonstrated an extraordinary fighting spirit on a high-pressure stage. In Italy, Gazzetta dello Sport focused on the mistakes of Neuer and the German defense, as well as warning that this defeat could create a major scratch in the German team’s confidence.
Even France’s L’Equipe believed that Germany still needs to find a clearer direction. Following the hard-fought victory over Ivory Coast and the defeat against Ecuador, the question regarding the Mannschaft’s stability is growing larger and larger.
